Oracle 19c Performance using the Ampere Altra A1 Processor

The Ampere Altra A1 processor uses single-threaded cores with a constant clock rate. The single-thread performance is significantly lower than that of Intel Xeon processors, but throughput scales almost linearly to full CPU utilization. Together with the low Oracle license core factor of 0.25, it represents a real alternative to x86 processors.


Scalability of Intel Xeon servers in Oracle database operation

The scalability of many database applications can be realized more easily with scale-up (within a server) instead of scale-out (load distribution across several servers with the addition of various software techniques such as Oracle Real Application Cluster or Oracle Sharding). Therefore, many manufacturers offer database servers with "2", "4", or "8" sockets. This allows both the CPU performance and the main memory capacity of a server to be expanded considerably. Large online transaction systems and the use of in-memory technology benefit from both features. The peakmarks® software includes separate workloads to analyze the scalability capabilities in Oracle database operations. Our study compares a 2-socket Intel Xeon 8358 to a 4-socket Intel Yeon 8380HL.


Exadata X9M PMEM for Log Writer

The performance of Oracle Log Writer processes is crucial for the overall performance of transaction-based databases. Exadata Generation X8M introduced persistent memory (PMEM) for a new log writer buffer. Using peakmarks® software, we can analyze log writer performance for different transaction sizes. In this study, we compared the performance of the current Exadata generation X9M-2 with an older Exadata system and a conventional all-flash array of the latest generation.


Oracle on IBM Database Server

The impact of storage tiering on Oracle performance

Most Exadata customers opt for the high capacity storage servers with two-tier storage tiering. Storage tiering should offer high capacity at moderate costs and good performance. Peakmarks has subjected an Exadata X5-2 QRHC system to an intensive test with various database sizes between "1" and "24" TByte. When using Exadata systems for online transaction processing, it is essential that all active data fit into the flash cache to achieve predictable and consistent performance.
